about
I wrote this song one year ago as we were a couple months away from the arrival of our first child. It was nearly Halloween and I day dreamt about years to come; all the costumes, candy, sticky fingers. I also thought about what it means to be scared. How will I tell my child to not be afraid when the world is indeed so scary? Will I be able to be a source of comfort and safety? I thought about my wife's father who passed away when she was only four years old. What would he have written or recorded for her to comfort her if he knew that he wouldn't be around for all those scary nights and bad dreams? What if I'm not around for my child?
Now we have a nine month old little boy. He's beautiful, funny, and an absolute joy. We're also months into a pandemic, social unrest, deep idealogical divides, etc. The world is scarier than when this song was first written. But our hope is no less sure. The third verse and bridge of this song are based on an experience I had as young kid in a bad storm. My grandparents were babysitting and I remember the thunder being so loud. The power went out and I was terrified. My grandfather reminded me that this storm wasn't out of control, it was God's storm. He made it rain, and thunder, and lightning. And there was good to come of it. It watered the fields and the thirsty grass. I believed everything he said, so I calmed down and crawled into his lap, at peace. I can't protect my son from everything, but I can teach him to rest in a powerful God.
"When the lights go out, that's when we see you."
I want him to see the hand of God when the lights go out; when I'm not around to be his comfort. He is never alone. You are never alone.
lyrics
There’s really nothing scary about the night
It only means the sun’s on the other side
She exits on the left and enters right
And it’s nice sometimes, turning off the lights
Underneath a blanket with your wand
You hear a noise that frights are built upon
And you imagine a great terror from beyond
It’s make believe, but you are real and strong
Thunder shakes the windows of your room
What else could it mean but certain doom?
This is our father’s world, so let’s assume
This storm is bringing what we need to bloom
When the lights go out, when the lights go out
That’s when, that’s when see You
That’s when…
I won’t always be around to hold your hand
Someday I’ll fly off to another land
And you’ll be here in the dark, you understand
But you’ll never be alone, you never can
